Synchrophasor data is generated from phasor measurement units (PMUs); PMUs measure voltage and current waveforms in terms of magnitude and phase angle and are time stamped using GPS-synchronized timestamps.




Wide Area Measurement Systems (WAMS) collect and analyze synchrophasor measurements over a wide geographic area of an interconnected power system.  WAMS provides the means to evaluate the measurements and their differences and determine grid characteristics that are valuable in assessing grid coherency, consistency, stability, etc. to improve overall power system reliability.  This provides overall situational awareness for power system operators.




This document is based on OSIsoft’s Cyber Secure Synchrophasor Platform (CSSP) implementation utilizing PI as the data infrastructure. The CSSP consists of a layered architecture for synchrophasor data collection and analytics across a large power system.  The interface components comprise the PI C37.118 and the PI FFT interfaces.
