Exercise 6: Build PI Points

Version 3

Exercise 6 - Once you have viewed the videos on creating PI Points, use the PI OPC Client Tool to browse the available tags on the local OPC Server, OPCSample.OpcDa20Server.1. Then, choose one of the two options below to create PI Points.

Option 1: Create PI Points using Point Builder and PI Builder

Create PI Points for the Pump 1 Flowrate and Pump 1 Status items using PI System Management Tools (PI SMT) Point Builder. Then, use the PI Builder add-in to Microsoft Excel to configure the remaining tags for Pump 1, as well as all the necessary tags for Pumps 2, 3, 4, and 5. Make sure that the necessary PI Point attributes are set to match the PI Interface for OPC DA that you previously configured so the PI Points are loaded by the PI Interface for OPC DA.

Create an Element Template for the pumps and create corresponding attributes for the PI Points (FlowRate, BearingTemp, Status, OutputFlowRate, PumpSpeed). Make sure to uncheck "Tag Creation" in the PI Point Data Reference window. Finally, create the actual Pump1, Pump2, ..., Pump5 elements. Verify that you can see current values for the newly created attributes in PI System Explorer.

Option 2: Create PI Points using Automatic Tag Creation in PI System Explorer

Create an Element Template for the pumps and create corresponding attributes for the PI Points (FlowRate, BearingTemp, Status, OutputFlowRate, PumpSpeed). Check "Tag Creation" and modify the PI Point attributes accordingly to create new PI Points. Then, create the actual Pump1, Pump2, ..., Pump5 elements and Create or Update Data References to create the PI Points. Verify that you can see current values for the newly created attributes in PI System Explorer.
