We have a distributed PI system with PI servers installed in remote locations. Frequently I have problems getting connected to the remote server & experience the  [-10734] PINET: Broken Connection.error.

SMT typically works fine, but Excel plugins & SDK code is where I have problems.

Anyone experienced similar? Where could I look for issues?

This issue is typically related to network.

If you try to do a "ping -t <PIserver>" for a few minutes, do you get time-outs ?

Are the clients or servers in Virtual Machines? It could be related to virtual server settings.

I don't have issues with time-outs.. In some cases the servers are in VM's. What types of VM settings would affect connectivity this way?

Please check out the following KB article, which contains a link to white paper on PI System Virtualization:

As noted, make sure the virtual network controllers (NICs) have fixed IP addresses, in addition to static MAC addresses.

To further troubleshoot the issue, you may want to try to capture network traffic between the server and client. Please contact OSIsoft Tech Support if you need help on doing this.
