Create a PI Connector that supports the MQTT messaging protocol
There is already a MQTT connector in development - PI Connector for MQTT Sparkplug. It's currently in beta.
When will this connector be released? I'm currently looking for an alternative to get the data into PI. I would be curious to know if anyone used other means to get the data. Chris
Christopher Coen are you able to answer this question? I can't remember the name of the other PM that looks after some of these connectors...
Abbas Saboowala is the product manager for this PI Connector. He can fill you in on it's status. Thanks, John Messinger
Hello Chris, we currently have a beta available for PI Connector for MQTT Sparkplug and are in the process of adding some more features into the beta and releasing a new beta in the next few weeks. This connector only support the Sparkplug message format. You mention you are looking for an alternative. What are you looking an alternative for? Do you use any existing connector or interface? Also, are you looking for a MQTT connector which supports a format besides Sparkplug?
Hi Abbas, I have a manufacturer that is providing me with data from their device through MQTT. We're looking into other protocols, but they seem to think that MQTT would be the best from their end. To be honest, I don't know what the Sparkplug message format is. What I meant by alternative was maybe someone used a protocol converter of some sort and a different pi interface that would allow me to collect the data. I believe the message format, and forgive my ignorance about this protocol/message format, is according to the NMEA standard. Thanks for your help. Chris
You will find information on Sparkplug B out here. Sparkplug B essentially defines a message format and other parameters to transfer data using MQTT.
Is the manufacturer who is sharing data with you an existing PI software user? If yes, then you could possibly leverage PI Cloud Connect as an alternate solution.
One other alternative, if the manufacturer is not an existing OSIsoft customer, is, you use HTTPS instead of MQTT and publish the data via REST calls (from the manufacturer's end) and have the PI Connector for UFL serve as a REST endpoint.
Let me know if you would like any further information on either the PI Connector for MQTT or PI Connector for UFL.
Hi Abbas, Thank you for the information. I don't believe the manufacturer is an OSIsoft customer. I will propose the HTTPS you mentioned and see what they come back with. Thanks again for your input. Chris
Hi Abbas, Can you confirm if any existing customers are testing the beta version you released or if any exiting customers will be testing the new one which will be released soon? When do you anticipate the official release to be? Just trying to gather data to see if this is a viable option for us. Chris
Yes, we have a few customers who have participated in the beta program for PI Connector for MQTT. We plan on releasing a new beta in the next 4-6 weeks. As for the official release, we are targeting Q4 2018.
Abbas SaboowalaIs there any news on the official release of this connector? Barry Higgins
Hello Barry, we are continuing to work with a couple of customer's to get concrete feedback from Beta testing. Would you be interested in Beta testing the connector and providing us feedback?
Abbas Saboowala Absolutely I would love the opportunity to test the connector. We have a use case right now that requires us to be able to send data from PI to an Edge server using MQTT. My email address is firstname.lastname@example.org
So, this product was in beta almost a year ago. Where is it now? I may have a use case, but need some direction.
What is the status of the PI Connector for MQTT?
Hello, I have a potential customer for MQTT sparkplug. I'm curious to know progress toward a release.
Hello, I'd like to know the status of the PI Connector for MQTT? Thanks!
Hello, any news about this connector?
Thank you for your inquiry. The product is in closed beta (not accepting any additional beta testers) and we are close to a release. We anticipate releasing this connector by end of Q2/early Q3, 2019.
Hello, how can I get the beta version of the connector to test it?Thanks,
