    PI Notification Text Message

    bluefish

We have PI Notification (PI Notification 2016 R2) to send alerts.  When it sends an email to notify group and it display the information correctly. However, it sends incomplete information via text message. We use the same format to send both email and text message. The first screenshot is via email. The second one is via text message. You can see that AlarmStatus value and data time value disappeared in the text version. Which place control this behavior? How can I correct it?

      Thanks,

What mechanism are you using to send these notifications via text message? I'm going to assume that it's either email to a SMS gateway, or via web service delivery to a SMS gateway. If it is either of these paths, have you tested sending similar content to your gateway using a means other than PI Notifications? What are the results of this testing?

I would be looking at performing this kind of testing to determine whether it is Notifications actually sending incomplete information, or your SMS delivery gateway that is truncating the output.

              John,

We use email to a SMS gateway. What are means that I can test this? We use PI Notification to send the same message to both email and text message. The email is correct and the text message is truncated. I have contacted our Microsoft Exchange expert in house. He suggested that this might be result of SMS gateway that is truncating the output.

              Thanks,

So the way I would test this is to send a similar email message to the SMS gateway from my regular email client, such as Outlook. If the resulting text message to your phone is truncated, then it would be more than likely that your gateway is responsible for truncating the messages, and not PI Notifications.

Is the gateway your own (in-house), or a third-party service providers? It might be worth looking at the gateway's settings or options available for message handling (if any). Looking at your original post, it didn't appear that your message was going over the 160 character limit for SMS, and anyway, I would expect that most SMS gateways today should be able to handle breaking up large messages into multi-part messages - smartphones can certainly handle them.

                Hi bluefish,

Can you try unchecking "Use HTML for Format" option is checked for the cell phones delivery end points?  Go to PSE > Contacts > Delivery Channel.  Some cell phone SMS gateways don't handle rich text as expected.
