Will there be dependencies on "local installed services to communicate with the PI Server" in the future?

Hi folks, I am new to the PI world which will explain my ignorance. I have build a serverless (<= the problem no doubt) web application to run on azure using .net framework and PI/AF SDK. Alas, it does not work and I understand why. So it looks like I will be converting my "function app" to a regular web app on a windows VM, correct? My client has a preference to use the serverless option (for cost and scalablity reasons), but unless I am missing something this will not be possible. Correct me if I'm wrong. I had herd from someone at the client that you (osisoft) were planning to release a .net standard compatible version of the AF/PI SDK sometime later this year. Is this correct? And if so, am I safe to assume that there will no longer be dependencies on "local installed services to communicate with the PI Server" and therefore be able to deploy our application to serverless infrastructure?
