The same white paper is now available on PI Square!
White Paper - Integrating the PI System with R (2nd version released - Aug/2016)
If you want to use the typical R distribution from R: The R Project for Statistical Computing (not the R.NET that the white paper discusses), you'll want to find the R packages that have connectors to PI data access providers (PI JDBC, PI Web API, PI OLEDB via linked server, etc.)
Note there is an issue with PI ODBC 2014 and the rodbc package. Due to implementation issues, PI ODBC 2014 will not work with rodbc.
