I haven't done this personally myself, but we have many PI Web API examples. Since it is a RESTful service, the semantics are similar regardless of the web application framework being used (e.g. Django, ASP.NET, RoR, etc.)

I looked over the Django documentation and I'll have to agree with Barry. The best way get data from a PI system into a Django base application is to use a library like requests.
It is a very easy to use python library and Barry's blog post is a good start to have an idea of how to format the urls that you will need to create in order to get data from a PI Data archive or AF database.
