Is it possible to dynamically filter element finds?

We have an application that requires the ability to find elements from PIAF.  The methodology of finding elements is predicated on the user's ability to provide custom filters.  For example, the user may want to find all elements in the system that are green, or purple, and created after a certain date.  This is very simple to do as an after-the-fact filtering algorithm.  However, that means that the code we have needs to talk to PIAF, get all the elements in the system, then filter the results down for the user.  Ideally, the query to PIAF includes these filters so as to ensure that the number of elements I get back to begin with is already small.

Any thoughts?

I understand that attribute queries can be built, but I was hoping for something more akin to OData wherein I can pass a string into the PIAF call.
