Do OSISoft or anyone in the community have any information/whitepapers on using BizTalk to directly access PI data using PI-OLEDB as an adapter? Checked the vCampus Library and no whitepapes, hint hint.
You are right in that we don't have a White Paper on the topic (and we definitely should), nor do we have one shipped with the PI OLEDB Provider itself (as a tutorial or in its documentation). I will get in touch with the people who can help make this dream a reality (whooo, I feel poetic this morning!)
Also, you might already be aware of this, but note that you have to use version 184.108.40.206 or later of the PI OLEDB Provider, as this version fixed a problem that prevented connectivity with Microsoft BizTalk Server 2006.
To the people who did use PI OLEDB in Microsoft BizTalk Server: any suggestion, pointers, watchas you have to share with us on the topic?
Quick follow-up on this topic: there definitely is activity going on regarding material on using integrating PI in BizTalk - even some activity with Microsoft directly
Also note that Microsoft BizTalk supports web service calls and as such, one could use PI Web Services (currently available as a CTP - see related blog posts) to bring PI (and eventually AF) data in the BizTalk environment. Make sure you get in touch with the PI Web Services team (most likely though the "Web Services and PI " forum) and give them feedback; your use cases and requirements will help further align the development roadmap for PI Web Services.
Steve...our focus shifted to PI WS since the CTP started (a great bonus of vCampus!). Most people I have talked to are going to adopt PI web services in BizTalk for accessing PI data, so this is my new direction. Sooner PI WS delivers AF data the better. Time for me to hop on some MS BizTalk training...

Steve, I know this is an old one but did you ever get any further with some BizTalk related material on PI access?
Rhys @ RJK Solutionsdid you ever get any further with some BizTalk related material on PI access?
Do you have problems using PI as a Linked Server and then using SQL queries to talk to BizTalk...?

Nope, no problem with that. I just would like a whitepaper (or equivalent) from OSI on their recommended methods for communicating with PI from BizTalk, which may well be using linked servers.
It really depends on your use case - what data or content, how much data, how often, reading from PI or writing to PI etc. PI Notif. can push an email or XML with or without attachments that BizTalk can process. You can also trigger a PI WS request or use SQL queries, and so on. Without knowing the use case, it is difficult to comment. As you are aware, PI has several data access methods (web services, oledb, notif., jdbc, opc, xml etc.). Similarly, Biztalk supports numerous ways to get at PI data and other content.
