Creating PI Points that are taken in charge by the PI OPC Interface is a matter of creating a classic PI Point and setting the right attributes; particularly, the PointSource and the Location1 through 5 attributes. The PI OPC Interface User Manual will guide you through the settings you need to use for these attributes and more.
One normally creates PI Points using tools like the "Points" plug-in in the PI System Management Tools (SMT), or the PI TagConfigurator add-in for Excel. It is also possible to create those points programatically, using technologies such as PI SDK or PI OLEDB.
For non-programming approaches (e.g. SMT, PI TagConfigurator), I invite you to contact our regular Technical Support team.
For programming questions, please post your question in the appropriate discussion forum (PI SDK Development or PI OLEDB Development).
I thought of a different scenario for Paul's question:
(OSIsoft's/Matrikon's/IntegrationObjects') OPC Server making PI data available via OPC
In any case, even in this scenario, the answer to Paul's question would be no, it's not possible to create PI tags via OPC. It is not due to limitations on OPC HDA Servers (OSIsoft's PI OPC DA/HDA Server included). It's just that the OPC HDA specification by the OPC Foundation does not list point/ItemID creation as a required feature for OPC HDA Servers.
In case you want to take a look at it yourselves, version 1.2 of the OPC HDA specification is available for download at http://www.iconics.com/support/PDFs/OPC_Specs/OPC%20HDA%20Specification.pdfhttp://www.iconics.com/support/PDFs/OPC_Specs/OPC%20HDA%20Specification.pdf
Thanks Steve and Daniel,
That answers my question. I realize now that I worded my question poorly. I should have specified that I was hoping to use the PI OPC Server.
This is what I had expected though, I just wanted to make sure there wasn't anything clever that I was missing. I appreciate your replies!
