Can I use the AF SDK on the Excel VBA? If yes, how can I use it.
No, you cannot use the AF SDK in Visual Basic for Applicatios (VBA), whether behind Microsoft Excel, PI ProcessBook, etc. The reason is that VBA is a COM-based technology (like VB6) and AF SDK is a .NET-based set of Assemblies. You can however use it in a VSTO/.NET add-in to Microsoft Excel (which is the preferred approach anyways).
You can find more information on this topic in this other thread (see my post further down in the thread).
Do not hesitate to initiate a new discussion thread on this forum for AF SDK question, and in the "ProcessBook/ActiveView and Microsoft Office Development" forum for Excel (you might also want to check out the Microsoft MSDN forums).
Hope this helps!
Therefore, what could be the short term solution to built in Excel around PI-AF? Using SQL related commands is the solution? Is PI OLEDB Enterprise will allow it? Is anyone tried it?
I remember once using PI OLEDB in Excel - so PI OLEDB Enterprise should work.
Yes, absolutely, you can use PI OLEDB Enterprise within Excel, to query PI System data through the PI Asset Framework (AF). A very interesting way to view and analyze the data is using PowerPivot, an Excel 2010 add-in.
You can see examples of this in some of the Builders' Café webinars:
and some of the recordings from OSIsoft vCampus Live! 2010:
