Can't find default database with AFSDK

I have set up PI and AF in a virtual environment to use for a development project and am having a problem. I can connect with AF explorer and see my database and elements but when I try to connect with AFSDK it does not seem to be able to see the database. The PISystems line works OK but the myPISystems does not have any databases associated with it and the second line throws the exception below. Even if I specify the system and database it still can't find it.

Can anyone tell m what is going wrong? thanks Michael Jones

PISystems myPISystems = new PISystems();

AFDatabase myDB = myPISystems.DefaultPISystem.Databases.DefaultDatabase;
