I have a VM that I am testing PI2016 and would like see my tags and some data
i have two ways that worked for me:
Either you update your old PI-Server to the same Version as the new Version. Then you can move the old PI Server to the new one via pi-backup.
Or you install the same Version of your old PI server on the new one. then you move the old one to the new via pi-backup. Then you update to the desired version.
That was always my strategy for productive servers. But if I understand your post correct you hae a productive PI-Server and you want to test your Data and Settings in the new VM with current PI Version without using the whole productive server to the VM.
If I´m right you can try to import the data via pi-backup. That is no way for a production move, but in testing it might work. Make sure that the new server is in an seperate network besides the production environment. It could come to problems if you have two PI-Servers with the same ID in your environment.
so can i simply uninstall PI2016R2, and install my version 3.4.375.99 64bit, bring archives and database over, then reinstall 2016. I already have SQL , AF, and client tools installed, hated to have to start from scratch
Flost mentioned the two supported ways to duplicate a database from 3.4.375.99 on 2016R2: (1) upgrade then move or (2) move then upgrade. Directly restoring a backup on a different version is not supported. PI 2016R2 will expect the backend files (archives, DAT files, etc) to look like 2016R2 files. It may not work correctly if the files come from an older version.
KB01163 has a nice overview of the steps to set up a PI System in a test environment. I recommend reviewing it if you want to learn more.
