We are implementing Microsoft Dynamics AX and are looking for methods to connect to PI to import process data.
According to Microsoft's website for Dynamics AX:
"The Microsoft Dynamics AX database is a relational database. Microsoft Dynamics AX supports Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle databases."
Since this is a relational database, you can get the data into PI using the PI Interface for Relational Database. You could also create a Linked Table in AF.
I agree that the RDBMS would be a logical choice for connecting to a SQL database; however, I have only used the RDBMS to read data into PI from a Relational Database not write to a Relational database from PI. I have used PI output points and would assume that this could be done if the AX SQL table structure would permit it. I was actually hoping for a standard connector or integrator like the one available for SAP Hanna.
As you guessed, you can use output points with the RDBMS Interface in order to write data to a relational database such as the AX database. There's no Connector or Integrator for Microsoft Dynamics AX at this point.
Another idea would be to use PI OLEDB to expose PI data in a relational manner, then use a stored procedure to send the data to the AX relational database.
If you're interested in a Connector or Integrator for Microsoft Dynamics AX, I recommend submitting your idea on our new feedback forum, and voting for any other ideas you would like to see.
It sounds like you may be interested in something like the PI Integrator for Business Analytics. It works the same as the PI Integrator for SAP Hana and supports publishing PI data to many different targets, including Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle. I'm not familiar with Microsoft Dynamics AX, but I imagine it would be possible to configure it to read from the SQL/Oracle table that the integrator creates. Would that work for you?
Our YouTube Learning Library has a nice overview video of the product if you would like to learn more: OSIsoft: What is the PI Integrator for Business Analytics? - YouTube
Jim: Can you elaborate on your use case? For integration with line of business systems, there is often a business process involved in the middle. Which module in Dynamics AX?
These are talks from previous UCs but the concepts illustrate the business process aspects as data from PI needs to be written to external systems or vice versa.
Today, PI WebAPI provides the SOA architecture you will use for line-of-business integration.
