PI Notifications using a web service delivery endpoint that only supports basic authentication

Using PI Notifications (PI Server 2016 R2), I am seeking to invoke a web service that only supports basic authentication.  It appears that PI Notifications does not support basic authentication for a web service delivery endpoint short of embedding the credentials in the URL—which is something I would rather avoid for security reasons. I could create as ASP.NET web service that uses Windows authentication from the Notifications service and proxies the requests through to the destination web service using basic authentication; however, I'd rather not add these additional moving parts to the solution if there is a way of accomplishing the goal through another cleaner mechanism.  Is basic authentication provided as an option for invoking web services, and I am missing it?
