dataPipe.GetUpdateEvents won't throw an exception, but the return value inherits from AFErrors. You should check if HasErrors is set on the return and if so, examine the Errors collection and the PISystemErrors and PIServerErrors.
AFListResults<TKey, TValue> derives from AFErrors<TKey>. So the AFListResult<AFAttribute, AFDataPipeEvent> has properties:
Since you are subscribing to PIPoint attributes, the Errors or PIServerErrors are most likely to be helpful.
