Could someone advise me please if there is a way to backfill a PI tag to January 2012 if I the PI tag was created July 2019?
What is the input to your tag? If this is an analysis tag you can backfill up until the time the input tags to the analysis have data. If you're using a data source that stores history you could also potentially backfill data. However, if your data source does not store history you will not be able to backfill data. Let us know what data source the tag is using to provide more information on the possibility of backfilling.
Hi Jessica, my data source is a database called IFS and it stores all historic data. I fetch the data from IFS to PI with MSSQL. So I'm guessing I just need to set my SQL query to get the dates for the data I'm missing and restart the interface to pull the data back in, then backfill recalculate the analysis? Thank you.
What interface (or other method) are you using to bring data into PI? You have a couple options for backfilling, and some resources can be found in the PI Server User Guide. There's also a good pisquare post that sounds similar to your use case and has more details about using piconfig to backfill data.
It's an rdbmspi interface, and what I tried which in theory should work is that I modified the sql query to run on the old dates I want to retrieve data for and restarted the interface. It hasn't bought anything in yet though, maybe just needs some time. I could add data points before the tag created date, and I could retrieve data on the main data source so there is no reason data shouldn't come across.
It probably would be a good option to open up a tech support case with OSIsoft so they can go into your system and see your configuration and settings. They should be able to give you more detailed steps on how you should go about backfilling and if any configuration needs to be changed.
I believe with PI 2016 on, a tag can be backfilled to an archive before the tags creation date, but, the archives to be written to have to be writeable. Some sites will set archives to read-only after a period of time.
Also, check on the edit days using PI-SMT, Operation, Tuning Parameters, Snapshot page.
One simple way to check is to go into PI-SMT, Data, Archive Editor and try to insert a value for a tag with a date in the January 2012 range.
Slight correction to your comment, but Tim is generally correct. Starting with PI Server 2012, you no longer have to reprocess archives prior to backfilling data earlier than a tag's creation date
Thank you Tim, just tried it and it works thanks!
