Is it necessary to create the backup on the local PI Data Archive machine first, or can it be sent directly to a remote location, bypassing the local copy altogether?
We have this following article on backing up the PI Data Archive to a network path. It is possible to do this directly and bypass the local copy, however, if there are network issues during the backup and it is interrupted, it will not try to recover and the backup will fail until the next scheduled backup.
If there is disk space available locally, we do recommend using that for the PI Backup, and then using a third-party backup to move the backup to a remote location as per the PI Data Archive Backup Best Practices.
Let me know if you have any questions about the above!
