While working from home using remote VPN during the COVID-19 pandemic, I have noticed that this "Calculating" indicator at lower right within Excel 2010 takes much longer to finish whenever I pull data and also use calculations while working remotely. Does Excel just use the word "Calculating" when it really means processing, which includes both network data transfers and calculations? Is there any way to find out what proportion of the "Calculating" time is PI data retrieval within Datalink formulas, and what proportion is running non-Datalink formulas within Excel?

I don't think there is an easy way to determine what portion of the "Calculating" time is for the data transfer and what portion is for actual calculation. This previous PI Square question covers a lot of bandwidth questions about DataLink.

I came across this interesting article with code that shows how to selectively calculate your spreadsheet to narrow down what portion of the sheet is consuming the most calculation time.
