When considering time zone for a new install of a Data Archive is it recommended to install the pertinent tz configuration files or ensure the server is using UTC time?
PI3 servers are designed to store timestamps in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), and display the timestamps on clients based on the time settings of the client machine. It is therefore recommended to have proper time zone settings and set to automatically adjust clock for the Daylight Saving Time changes.
The appropriate localhost.tz file should be downloaded and applied to the PI Data Archive, as well as the Windows clock set to the correct time/timezone.
The key thing to recognize, is that while the localhost.tz file does include timezone information, more importantly is that it contains the DST rules for past years that may not be included by the OS time settings. The windows clock will only carry DST rules for the current year, and apply those rules to past years. Depending on the region where the PI Data Archive resides, these DST rules may have changed, and in order for the PI Data Archive to properly handle retrieving data in the past around DST transitions, the appropriate localhost.tz file (downloaded from customer portal) should be applied.
