Hello, I was reading the agenda on Vcampus Live 2013 and I saw a topic with PI Coresight with PB Displays, any news on when we get to see a demo of this working?
You can see a demo that was show at our Paris UC in September. This link should take you directly y to the video. http://www.osisoft.com/Templates/item-abstract.aspx?id=10423
Of course I think the whole presentation is worth watching but if you want to see the PB display demo specifically you can jump to minute 23. We expect to release PI Coresight 2014 in Q2 2014 with this functionality.
What about use Excel file with some calculations in PI Coresight 2014. Is that will be possible?
@Mohammed: Are you asking if PI Coresight would "show" Excel sheets embedded?
Could you describe your use case?
What about ProcessBook displays with VBA? Will there be any kind of (at least partial) support for it?
Sorry, but VBA does not work in a thin client. VBA code requires access to Windows libraries that are generally not available through a web browser, and if you think about it that is for very good reason. Such a thing would be a huge security risk.
We do hope to provide another scripting type solution through PI Coresight, probably based on Java script, but I do not have a time frame for this.
Makes sense. Thanks Tom.
On Excel in CoreSight: typically i see the usage of Excel services on SharePoint to provide (thin client) access to Excel files containing PI data.
On VBA code in ProcessBooks: i think the code generally falls into two categories: 1) User interface logic and 2) Business / data / information logic.
For case 1, one should reconsider if the UI logic realised by this VBA code is this applicable when loading the ProcessBooks in CoreSight. E.g. for navigation, write-back of data, etc., CoreSight is not really the place anyway.
For case 2, i think the best practice is to move the business logic to a middle tier anyway, and away from the front-end. E.g. to move this logic to AF.
Yes, I agree, the logic data logic should stay in AF. The use of VBA in my case would be for user interface logic, such as adding symbols dynamically, etc.
Considering that VBA will not be supported, can we say that all other regular PB symbols will work in Coresight (such as PB button, for example)? Since they are already supported by PI Graphic webpart, I believe it wouldn't be too difficult to have it supported in Coresight.
The answer is mostly yes. There are a few exceptions so it is easier to tell you what will not work.
The following PI ProcessBook display features WILL NOT be supported in the PI Coresight 2014 release:
• ODBC datasets
• Logarithmic scales on Trends
• SQC Chart
• Batch Trend
• VBA script
• 3rd Party ActiveX controls
Two types of button links WILL BE supported:
• Relative links to ProcessBook displays
• Absolute URLs to websites or other web resources
Tom, thanks for your answer. I have one more question on this: will the ERD (Element Relative Displays) feature be supported as well?
Sorry, I should have included that in my last response.
The bad news: There will be no graphical interface available to change the element of interest on a display. An element relative display will show data from the element that was selected at the time the ProcessBook display was imported into PI Coresight.
The good news: There will be a URL parameter that can be used to set the element if interest for a display. The expected scenario here is that some external application is building the URL to call the display and set the parameter for the element of interest.
What do you think?
I think passing the URL to set the element of interest is fine, and will be sufficient for the majority of use cases. Since you mentioned the new Coresight will be based on HTML5, can we assume that element relative displays (either based on PB or not) will work in Coresight being accessed from a mobile device? At least for now ERD Coresight displays (based on querystrings) do not work on iPhone, but I understand this limitation will no longer exist. Is this correct?
Thanks for all these clarifications, just I'd like ask about the time when new version will be released?
Please allow me referring you to the PI System Roadmap for the product release schedule. PI Coresight 2014 (Version 2.0) is a major product release scheduled for Q2/2014. Please also pay attention to the note at the bottom of PI System Roadmap page.
Tom - any idea when SQC Charts will be supported in Coresight? It's the one thing holding us back from using it.
Hi Ryan- We are on schedule for a release of PI Coresight 2014 in late August or early September. Unfortunately we will not be supporting PI ProcessBook SQC Charts in this release. I really hate to hear that that is preventing you from being able to use the product. Can you explain a little bit about how you use SQC Charts? Is it important that we support it as part of a PI ProcessBook display or would it be ok if we had similar SQC Chart features as part of a native PI Coresight display?
Any news on whether SQC Charts and their features being supported in the PI CoreSight 3.0 (2016) release? I didn't see anything of it mentioned in the blurbs about the Q2 2016 release but I'm hoping.
