Learning Lab - Build a Display in PI ProcessBook Part 1

Are you new to PI ProcessBook? Are you just curious about its features?  Well, you came to the right place.  This Learnig Lab is a nice way to get familiar with this powerful tool.  In this tutorial I will show you how easy and quick it is to build a display in PI Processbook.  The display will mimic a control room workstation and will display real time data of the level in a batch reactor.  It will also include low and high level indicators and a trend with the level for the last 8 hours and the capability to trend the historical level of the reactor.

When we are done, the display will look like the picture below.  You can follow the step by step instructions to reproduce the display on your production PI System.  If you do not have access to a PI System or PI ProcessBook to follow this Learning Lab, you can register for the OSIsoft Virtual Learning Environment. Read more about the Virtual Learning Environment and how you can become familiar with the PI System and all the tools developed by OSIsoft.  This Learning Lab was developed using the Virtual Learning Environment, PI System 2010 and PI ProcessBook 2010.

Create a PI ProcessBook display

Open PI ProcessBook by going to Start > All Programs > PI System > PI ProcessBook.  Once PI ProcessBook is opened, you can create a new display from the "File" menu.  Click on File > New.  Select ProcessBook Display (.pdi) file, type the display name "PB Batch Reactor" and click OK.  To save your display, click on File > Save.  On the Save As dialog window you can change the location or the name of the file and then click Save.  While I will be accessing all the features from the standard menu, many of them have icons in the toolbars that provide you with quicker access to them.

Adding static elements to a display

Ok, so you decided to continue with the Learning Lab.  Great choice!  To add, edit or delete objects from a PI ProcessBook display you must switch to the "Build" mode.  Click on Tools > Build.  By default, every time you complete an operation the "Run" mode is reactivated automatically.  When creating new displays it is helpful to change this behavior.  Go to Tools > Preferences > General tab, uncheck the Prefer Run Mode check box and click OK.  From now on you will have to switch between modes manually.

Using the grid option makes arranging and aligning objects easier when editing displays.  Click on Arrange > Snap to Grid.

We will now add a tank from the "Symbol Library" which contains images for almost every object you can find in your facility.  Click on Draw > Symbol Library.  Now draw a rectangle by dragging your mouse in the display area.  Your tank will fill this rectangle, but you will be able to resize it and move it around later.  A dialog box will appear with all the items from the "Symbol Library".  Select the "Tanks" category, and select any tank you want.  I used the one called "Reactor 4" in my example.  Before you add the tank, you can click on "Options", which allow you to change the color, background and orientation of the tank.  Note that the color can only be changed if the "Fill" mode is shaded, solid or hollow.  Click OK when done.

Resize the tank by dragging one of the corners.  Now drag the tank to the desired position.  Repeat the steps above and add the inlet pipe, the outlet pipe and a valve.  You can add any type and color of object you want.  However, see if you can find and align the same objects I used to match the picture.  You can adjust the position of the objects by selecting the tank and clicking on Arrange > Bring to Front.  Repeat the process to display the valve on top of the inlet pipe.

Now click on Draw > Text and draw a rectangle under the tank.  Type "Stirred Tank" and press enter.  While the text is selected, click Edit > Format > Font.  Change the font size to 14 and activate Bold.  Click on Edit > Format > Color and change the font color to black.  Center the text under the tank by selecting both the tank and the text and click on Arrange > Align > Center.

Click on File > Save.  Your display has been saved and it is ready to add some dynamic elements that can display real time data from the field.
