When publishing a subset of my PI AF hierarchy to a partner that subscribes to that data, is the data stored in the Cloud? Also, is the data encrypted when transferred between publishers and subscribers?
Conceptually, PI Cloud Connect works like an interface. The Cloud (Azure) components of PI Cloud Connect acts as the conduit and the broker of data between publishers and subscribers. No 'process' data extracted from the PI System is stored in Azure except for buffering purposes to cope with potential connectivity issues. Some configuration data (users, publications, subscriptions, nodes…) does reside in the Azure but that information is siloed/isolated
for each tenant.
Regarding your question on encryption, the short answer is that the data is not encrypted. However, all communication channels between the publishers and the subscribers are secured via HTTPS (which works Secure Sockets Layer -SSL- to encrypt all communication). So in simple terms, the pipe is encrypted but the data in the pipe is not. Full encryption would require that both the publishers and the subscribers agree a priori on an encryption mechanism which
would significantly complicated the data sharing mechanism. At this point, and even though we‘ve have discussed encryption with several customers, data encryption hasn’t been a strong requirement.
