As far as I'm aware, there is no built-in point attribute for future tags that "points" to another point (excuse the pun ). The only attribute that identifies the point as future is the "future" point attribute.
To organize the historical/future points, I would recommend that AF element templates are used to create the points/attribute templates, by using the "tag creation" feature. Therefore, historical and future points exist together within the same AF element, and you can define a consistent naming convention using element and attribute templates. For example, future tag names can have a "_future" appended at the end. Below are additional resources for how to configure and visualize future data points. For AF Client visualization products, defining attribute templates for future points also helps automate some of the configuration process.
Thanks quick reply Barry,
This is pretty much the conclusion we came to, just wanted to make sure we weren’t missing something. Shame there isn’t a way to “marry” a historical tag to a primary future tag outside of naming convention or under a common element with appropriate attribute setting. Of course I understand there may be a one to multiple mapping possible, just wouldn’t be very common.

This is something the PI Data Archive development team are aware of and have discussed. I'm not privvy to most of those conversations but I hope something will make its way into the release. If not I'll be the first to knock on their door and ask why not
This is on our roadmap, but won't make the 2015 release.
