There is a need to use the results of a query one PI server to get results of a query on another PI server. I would like to do this with PI SQL Commander if possible. Can it be done? Do I need to create a linked server?
I have just tested this on PI SQL Commander, and I do not believe this is possible. I believe that you will need to create two linked servers on a SQL Server using SQL Server Management Studio, and then you will be able to query against both PI Servers by using the different linked servers.
It seems this would be a nice feature to add in the next version of PI SQL Commander. I'll try configuring via SSMS.
Not a problem Jeff. i will definitely mention this to our product specialists to see if we can get an enhancement request for this feature.
Within SSMS, this should be fairly straightforward. Feel free to reply if you cannot get it to work with SSMS, or if the issue gets slightly more complex, you may want to contact technical support.
Just as an update in case it helps anyone else, using SSMS worked beautifully for doing joins between tables on different PI Servers.
Just make sure that you have PI OLEDB or PI OLEDB Enterprise installed on the machine where SQL Server is hosted before attempting to create the linked servers.
