Is there a way to return strings from an element attribute formula?

I'm having trouble finding an answer in the documentation so I'll ask here:

I have an element representing a weather tower with attributes for temperature sensors at 200 feet and 30 feet.  I have a third attribute that I want to represent the stability between those two temperatures.

The stability is determined like this:

A = 200_Foot_Temperature

B = 30_Foot_Temperature

C = A - B

if C <= -1.7 then "A"

else if C > -1.7 and C <= -1.5 then "B"

else if C > -1.5 and C <= -1.35 then "C"

etc.

But, when evaluating the formulas, the formula configuration doesn't like the return value.  So, is there a way to return strings from an equation?
