I Initially created a heap of elements and set the template as 'none', only to go back and find that if you don't set a template the template selection is greyed out. Is there anyway around this?
There's a couple of ways you can do this. On an individual basis, you can right click on an Element, and select Convert => Change Template, as per the screenshot:
For a large number of Elements, you could use the PI Builder add-in for Excel, and perform a bulk update of Elements (add the required Element Template name to the template field).
If you have configured these non-templated Elements with a set of attributes already, you might want to consider whether creating a new template from one of these Elements is an option. To do this, you would select the 'Convert to Template' option from the Convert menu option:
Remember that when changing the template of an existing Element, that any non-default values in attributes will be lost. This is where using PI Builder can be advantageous, as you can import any such values into the spreadsheet, and then export them back as appropriate with the new template configuration.
Do you mean that General tab's Template part is grayed out?
You can right click the element in the hierarchy and Convert > Change Template to apply your element template.
Also you can set the template from PI Builder too. (Check Element > Template check box and import the element)
