what is the difference between tags, pi points and pi assets
PI Point is one item in PI Data Archive which collects time series data.
Tag depends on who you ask
- it might be the same as PI Point.
- it might be one set of value, timestamp and status collected by PI Point
PI Assets - These are usually items in AF Server
- AF Server is hierarchical structure of assets: Elements, Attributes, Tables, Analysis...
I hope that I answered your question.
Tags and PI Points are synonymous and store time-series data. Each data stream requires its own separate tag or PI Point. An asset is used within our PI Asset Framework(AF) and often represents a physical object within a plant or facility. It is a way to organize your data in a more human friendly manner. For example in the picture below you have a tank which is a physical structure within your plant. That tank may have multiple data streams(such as temperature, level, and agitator speed) that you need to collect data for. Those data streams will be collected using tags and PI points. Those then get transferred over to AF and stored under the tank(the asset) as attributes.
