How can I transfer all the data and the settings, tags etc over to the new one?
We intend to have a Data server, an AF server and one for Vision.
I'd hate to have to recreate 7000+ tags....
For migrating a PI Data Archive's configuration (such as tag settings, security, etc.) we recommend running a PI Data Archive backup and copying these files to the new machine. For archive and corresponding annotation files, these can be copied from a recent backup or by copying them directly to an external drive. Note that the latter option requires you to either unregister the archives (see Unregister archives in bulk) or to stop the PI Archive Subsystem temporarily while they are being copied; otherwise you will get an error stating that these files are already in use. PI Archive Subsystem will need to be stopped either way when copying the primary archive. Please see the PI Data Archive Installation and Upgrade Guide for the full detailed steps of migrating a PI Data Archive in the section Move your PI Data Archive to a new computer.
Each piece of software has a different process to be migrated. But the good news is that you won't need to recreate anything.
You can find information about migrating the products on the documentation and youtube videos.
Basically you will need to get a backup of each product (each one has its own backup procedure) and do a restore on the new installation.

I suggest you to get in contact with our techsupport if you have doubts.
Many thanks for the replies and great info.
Lots to do to get ready for this and no time to do it in
I'll be back with more questions I assure you!
If that seems like a lot, you could also make use of our Field Service department that can perform the migration for/with you.
Hi Julie, the key to moving these services (Data Archive, AF, Vision) to separate machines is to have an organized plan. In the server moves we do, we use checklists to ensure that everything is done in sequence to minimize data loss and downtime for users.
I recommend you move each piece separately. Moving PI Vision, for example, is relatively simple as you essentially install the same version on the new server, then copy the database over.
Moving the Data Archive is harder as you have to point the PI interfaces at the new server, update clients or use name redirection, etc.
Each service has its own quirks but if you approach it in a methodical, organized fashion it should go smoothly. The references that Gustavo de Grava Chermont provided are very good.
If you don't feel that you can do it internally, then you can engage OSIsoft Field Services or use a system integrator.
I laid the steps in the process out in my head as I lay my self down to sleep.
Then filled pages of paper with them.... (then called the OSI people when I got stuck).
Now the system is moved and every thing reconnected...
Not too bad for just learning about PI in April
Many thanks for all the help!
